Hold on, before you jump to conclusions, I'm not talking about the stuff that gets on your neck when you've been playing out when your a kid (Sorry, thats Grime isn't it..oh well, bear with me). We seem to have a lot of it these days dont we? Crime I mean, not Grime. Much more than we did in, say, the 1950's. Or thats what some people would have you believe and they could be right. I'm not sure about that but what I do think is, we havent got suitable deterrents like we had back then. | | The police look more scared!! |
When people start to talk about hanging for example, it raises all sorts of emotions. I think, and this is only my personal view of course, that if a person wilfully murders another person or persons, and it is proved beyond reasonable doubt then that individual should be sentenced to death. Now I know people out there will say that in the past innocent people were sent to the gallows and they are correct. But nowadays with all the technology we have, this would not happen.
Another thing we had in the 1950's was National Service. What was the point of getting rid of that? What I mean is, these yobs that repeatedly terrorise people and cause damage to property and cruelty to animals should be punished by being sent to camps like the National Service ones and taught respect. If, after two years they came out and were no better (highly unlikely) send them back in.
For other offences like repeatedly dropping litter for example, make them sweep our streets or tend to elderly peoples gardens. Or what about bringing back the birch? The people that had that didn't usually go back for more! I really dont think we've got suitable deterrents for these undesirables and until we do, I think it will only get worse.
