George Best E-mail
Contributed by Gloop
When I was at secondary school I really wanted to "fit in", so I looked at the other kids to see what they were into and took it from there. Me being a bloke and the girls being them, whatever they did wasnt going to work for me so I decided to have a look at the lads pastimes and interests. The conclusion...Girls and Football! The first one was out because I didnt stand a chance with any of them because I did try with some and failed big style. So football it was then.

I really tried with this, my Mum bought me a Manchester United football kit (Only because my Mum and Dad both came from Manchester) and some very special football boots. When I was trying to mix in with the football types one footballers name kept on cropping up, George Best. I did a bit of research and found out about him, he was great. Not only was he a fantastic footballer but nearly all the girls liked him so I thought we (the girls and I ) would have something in common to talk about.(er, in case your wondering, we didnt) Anyway, after watching football on the TV and reading about Man U and GB I learned he endorced a revolutionary pair of boots.

These were imaginatively called "The George Best Football Boots". They were purple and silver in colour and the great thing about them was the laces tied at the sides!!! This was supposed to make you have more control over the ball. It didnt, in my case it didnt.. I was rubbish, in fact, very rubbish, so much so that all the boys, and girls for that matter laughed at me. A LOT! So there ended my footballing days but I always kept an eye on George.  He was one of footballs first superstars and although there have been many before and since as good as him on the pitch, he was probably one of the first superstars in the teen idol kind of way. Its very sad to see the way his life turned out in the end, but, only one person to blame for that. From all accounts he was a very nice, genuine person with a lot of time for a lot of people, more than can be said for a lot of todays "superstars". Even though I didnt follow in Georges footballing footsteps, he was a part of my growing up. Good on yer George...
