What’s wrong with ID?

The government are proposing national identity cards for us all to carry, to make it easy for the security and police services to do their work.  Loads of poncy civil liberties groups seem to think this is a problem???

I think it’s a great idea to have ID.  Most of us carry it now anyway.  Passports, driving licence etc all count, so what’s wrong with making it formal?

If it helps catch criminal and better still terrorists then I am all for it.  What is the problem with people knowing who you are?  Nothing that I can see if you are doing nothing wrong?  Its only people who want to hide what they are doing who have any reason to be against carrying ID isn’t it?  We live in pretty much a big brother state now anyway.  Most people can be tracked by the credit and debit card spending, your mobile phone pinpoints you within a mile or two, if you live in London, your Oyster card tracks you across public transport, your shop loyalty card knows more about your shopping then you do probably, etc etc.

So what’s wrong with making it formal? Having to use your ID to get a mobile phone, to open a bank account, to buy a house?  Sounds fine to me.

What I am against though is paying for them. And there had better be good checks to make sure the criminals and terrorists don’t get fake ID cards – that would be worse than not having them.
