John Lochrie from Galashiels E-mail

Kids these days think they have it rough, but if they were John Lochrie from Galashiels in Scotland, they would have something to complain about!

John Lochrie was born in Galashiels on March 18th, 1861. the son of Neil Lochrie and Janet Provan. John grew up to be a miner like his father, and from the age of just 10 years old, he was operating the trap doors, as a trapper boy, ensuring that gas explosions didnt harm the miners down in the Galashiels mines. Thats an awful lot of responsibility for a lad of 10, to be in charge of ensuring the safety of all those workers!

At 12 years old, John Lochrie was pushing mining carts down to the miners and the narrow gangways were so typically low, that they would often scratch all the skin of the young lads back and the sulphur riddled water, would perish the skin on his feet. Those were the days when living wasnt as easy as it is today!

Id like to see some of todays kids living that life... it would teach them hard work, discipline and the fact that you have to earn what you get, not steal it! Not a bad set of qualities, i believe!
