Olympic medals do feel sweet! E-mail

As your correspondent from Sweden (self titled of course) I just have to take a few minutes of time to tell you how sweet it is to feel the Olympics going on in Torino. As a very Nordic country and with the "little brother" Norway always in the lead and we in the shadows of them we have not been so good recently in the Olympic's winter history. We have been sitting and watching the Norwegians win gold after gold and medal after medal that have gone to our beloved Neighbours.

Don't get me wrong, Sweden and Norway must be the best of neighbours in the world. I would not be surprised that there would be more couples formed of one Swede and one Norwegian in percentage than the rest of the neighbouring countries in the world. We even had a non-war split up between the countries some 100 years ago.

But every now and then we have to be patriotic too in Sweden and the Olympics are a great unharmfull time for this. Right at this spot Sweden have taken two gold, one silver and one bronze. In total Norway have taken more then us: One gold, six silver and six bronze medals, but we have got one more gold, this puts us at the top of the list above Norway if you would solely just look at the five Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland). I would not be surprised if we take more medals in this Olympics then ever in Sweden. Maybe Norwegians will take more then us, and even more gold medals. But I would say that once and for all the dignity that we used to have in Sweden is restored and back in the spine of everyone of us. Mainly because we got gold in the most important winter sport of them all: Skiing! Not since 1988 had a man took a gold in skiing and not since 1968 had a woman done the same. This year that spell has been broken!

What other chances does Sweden have? Well Anja Persson, our downhill queen will certainly take one or two more medals. Maybe if Anna Carin Olofsson in biathlon could take one more, I don't really know? If the Ice hockey teams are having good times we would take something there as well. Curling? Maybe! Other sports I do not have so much information about, but would be fun as well!

Well before this part of the world gets all snowed in on sports I think it is my time to stop nagging about anything sporty!
