Walpurgis Night, should be the fun day in Sweden to celebrate that spring has finally come to your cold country with bonfires all around the country. Some make a barbecue-party for the first time of the year others go out and have fun at pubs after the bonfires. In Uppsala, the old University town near Stockholm, they have fun in the tiny river and make really unsafe boats to travel. In almost all University townspeople are standing at the fireplace singing hymns to the spring to come closer and faster to our cold hearts that have had snow for more then half a year in the Nordic parts. some parts of Sweden do have carnivals too at this day especially in Gothenburg. So why is this day so horrific? Well as always many young teenagers can't stay away from alcohol. This is the day when most young people start their drinking days. Almost all ends up with puking in the bushes or with a hangover the day after. Some young girls also get the experience that is the total nightmare for all girls. they get raped. Many people gets into fistfights and some people are killed on the road driving drunk. And of cause robbery is also very usual to happen today. So all in all this is a really dark day for some people of Sweden. The name Walpurgis Night originates from the saint of Walpugis. This day celabrates in: Sweden, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Tjeckia and Germany. Mostly with fireplaces. Walpurgis was born in Wessex in 710 a niece of Saint Boniface. Some see her as a witch.
